Vowel Recognition

Materials:

  • Phonics Worksheet #3 or #4 (plastic cover)
  • Dry Marker

Level 1:  Recognizing the vowel(s) within a word

  • Student places a dot above each vowel in a word
  • Initially, a non-timed activity
  • To increase speed and monitor accuracy, introduce the timer.
  • Erase the sheet (plastic covered)

Level 2:  Saying the isolated vowel rule within a word

  • Student places a dot above each vowel in a word
  • Student says the vowel rule (short if one, long if two, R Controlled or diphthong)
  • Initially, a non-timed activity
  • To increase speed and monitor accuracy, introduce the timer.

Level 3:  Saying the isolated vowel sound within a word

  • Student places a dot above each vowel in a word
  • Student says the vowel sound (short if one, long if two, R Controlled or diphthong)

Level 4:  Sound blending a word after isolating vowel sound

  • Student places a dot above each vowel in a word
  • Student says the vowel sound (short if one, long if two, R Controlled or diphthong)
  • Student blends the sounds to say the word
  • Initially, a non-timed activity
  • To increase speed and monitor accuracy, introduce the timer.
