R Controlled Vowels - Orange Juice

What:

R Controlled vowels are the vowels a, e, i, o, and u that are influenced by the letter "r".  There are six sounds created by "r" influenced vowels.  There are 13 vowel patterns that create the six sounds.

  • ar - car
  • ur - fur, dirt, fern
  • or - for
  • air - pair, fare, pear
  • ear - hear, deer
  • ire - fire
  • ore - store, oar (same sound as "or")

Why:

Since R Controlled vowels make up 8% of single syllable words and have six sounds and thirteen different vowel patterns, they have to have a special focus.  The goal is to see and say a word in less than one second.
